About Portland

Portland, Oregon: One of the 10 Most Haunted Cities in America

The City of Roses, Beervana, Bridgetown…  Portland is known by many names.  USA Today voted us one of the 10 Most Haunted Cities in America for our mysterious Shanghai Tunnels in Old Town, and we’d love to show you, the members of the 2014 World Horror Convention, around our town.

Portland has many wonderfully macabre sites to see:

  • The Clinton Street Theater doesn’t just dream it — they’ve shown “The Rocky Horror Picture” (almost) every Saturday night since April 1978, only taking off holidays.
  • The annual H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival, which was founded in 1995, is a great way to fulfill your horror movie needs.
  • The Lovecraft is a horror-themed bar that pays tribute to the world of horror in all of its forms with Lovecraft inspired and local art and decor.
  • Voodoo Doughnut, a 24-hour doughnut shop that offers — in addition to a crazy selection of doughnuts — legal wedding ceremonies. It also boasts the Guinness Book of World Records’ title for “World’s Largest Box of Doughnuts.”
  • The TV show “Grimm” is filmed here in town.  Perhaps you’ll bump into one of the stars or maybe one of the spooks.
  • Though not horrific at all, no list of Portland attractions would be complete without mentioning the Mecca of bibliophiles everywhere, Powell’s City of Books.

Thanks to a multi-modal approach to transportation, commutes in Portland are 20 percent shorter than in other U.S. cities.  Getting from our international airport, or from the Amtrak / Greyhound station, to downtown can be easily accomplished by bus, MAX train or by car.

When it comes to dining options in Portland, a passion for seasonal ingredients — from salmon to Dungeness crab, pears to Marionberries, hazelnuts to chanterelle mushrooms — pervades kitchens throughout the city. Fine-dining restaurants and down-home food carts alike celebrate the region’s bounty with fresh, innovative creations.
